Prayer and the Life of the Christian

by Tyler Henry

Prayer is one of the most important things we do as Christians. It is a direct line of communication from us to God. It is also one of the most understated disciplines of spiritual life. Often we take for granted that open line of communication that was given to us that we forget to dedicate time to pray. The busy life of the 21st-century person only contributes to this. But why pray? I want to offer three reasons as to why we should pray as Christians.

1. The bible calls us to pray and pray continually (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

2. It’s our time to express our innermost desires and hurts (Romans 8:26-27).

3. Prayer is rejuvenating (Jesus would retreat and pray after he would perform a miracle).

When we pray, we effectively answer God’s call. He wants us to be able to come to him for and with everything. Praying is us coming to God verbally.

We at City Church often talk about our posture. When we do, we mean to say that our hearts should match our body language. Verbally praying (when we can) takes what is in our hearts and brings it to the surface. There is something beautiful that surfaces when we do: trust. A Christian philosopher, Greg Koukl, said once that God’s work is 100% God and 100% man. That statement means that God is responsible for 100% of his side and, we are responsible for our 100%. Praying is only a fraction of that 100% and, God loves when we do because when we posture ourselves in prayer, we are trusting God to do his 100%.

How can you do this? Start by taking time out of your day to join City Church in prayer.
